    Power quality improvements through power electronic interfaced distributed generation

    In low-voltage distribution networks a large amount of single-phase nonlinear loads are connected. This leads to the combined presence of power system unbalance and harmonic distortion. The research presented in this paper focusses on these steady-state power quality problems. It uses a harmonic load flow program, implemented in symmetrical components, to investigate the influence of several single-phase inverter control strategies used to connect any kind of primary energy source to the grid. The influence of these single-phase distributed generation units in the three-phase four-wire distribution network is discussed by means of two recently formulated indicators that combine the power system unbalance and the existing harmonics

    Harmonic effects on induction and line start permanent magnet machines

    Power Electronics (PE) are implemented in a wide variety of appliances, either to increase its controllability or energy efficiency, or simply because a DC supply is needed. The massive integration of rectifiers has resulted in a decrease of the supply voltage quality. Although PE have enabled the end user to control electrical machines, the resulting distortion inversely affects Direct On-Line (DOL) machines. In this paper a review is presented of the influence of these supply anomalies on Induction Motors (IM). The suggested problems have already been subject of much study. However, as new DOL technologies are emerging, for example Line Start Permanent Magnet Machines or Induction Generator systems, the influence of supply distortion on these systems should also be considered.     Wireless synchronisation for low cost wireless sensor networks using DCF77

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) consist out of multiple end nodes containing sensors and one or more coordinator nodes which poll and command the end nodes. WSN can prove very efficient in distributed energy data acquisition, e.g. for phasor or power measurements. These types of measurements however require relatively tight synchronisation, which is sometimes difficult to achieve for low-cost WSN. This paper explores the possibility of a low-cost wireless synchronization system using the DCF77 long wave time signal to achieve sub-millisecond synchronisation accuracy. The results are compared to conventional GPS based synchronisation. As a practical example, the implementation of the described synchronisation method is proposed for a non-contact electrical phase identifier, which uses synchronised current measurements to distinguishing between the different phases in an unmarked electrical distribution grid

    Empowering customer engagement by informative billing: a European approach

    Programmes aimed at improving end-use energy efficiency are a keystone in the market strategies of leading distribution system operators (DSOs) and energy retail companies and are increasing in application, soon expected to become a mainstream practice. Informative services based on electricity meter data collected for billing are powerful tools for energy savings in scale and increase customer engagement with the energy suppliers enabling the deployment of demand response programmes helping to optimise distribution grid operation. These services are completely in line with Europe’s 2020 strategy for overall energy performance improvement (cf. directives 2006/32/EC, 2009/72/EC, 2012/27/EU). The Intelligent Energy Europe project EMPOWERING involves 4 European utilities and an international team of university researchers, social scientists and energy experts for developing and providing insight based services and tools for 344.000 residential customers in Austria, France, Italy and Spain. The project adopts a systematic iterative approach of service development based on envisaging the utilities’, customers’ and legal requirements, and incorporates the feedback from testing in the design process. The technological solution provided by the leading partner CIMNE is scalable open source Big Data Analytics System coupled with the DSO’s information systems and delivering a range of value adding services for the customer, such as: - comparison with similar households - indications of performance improvements over time - consumption-weather dependence - detailed consumption visualisation and breakdown - personalised energy saving tips - alerts (high consumption, high bill, extreme temperature, etc.) The paper presents the development approach, describes the ICT system architecture and analyses the legal and regulatory context for providing this kind of services in the European Community. The limitations for third party data access, customer consent and data privacy are discussed, and how these have been overcome with the implementation of the “privacy by design” principle is explained

    Comparitive study of the influence of harmonic voltage distortion on the efficiency of induction machines versus line start permanent magnet machines

    Induction machines have nearly reached their maximal efficiency. In order to further increase the efficiency the use of permanent magnets in combination with the robust design of the induction machine is being extensively researched. These so-called line start permanent magnet machines have an increased efficiency in sine wave conditions in respect to standard induction machines, however the efficiency of these machines is less researched under distorted voltage conditions. This paper compares the influence of harmonic voltage distortion and the phase angle of the harmonic content on the overall motor efficiency of line start permanent magnet machines and induction machines

    Overview of increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources in the distribution grid by developing control strategies and using ancillary services

    Increasing the renewables energy resources in the distribution network is one of the main challenges of the distributed system operator due to instability, power quality and feeder capacity problems. This paper proposes a solution for further penetration of distributed energy resources, by developing control strategies and using ancillary services. Besides the penetration issues, the control strategies will mitigate power quality problems, voltage unbalance and will increase the immunity of the grid by provision of fault ride through capabilities
